The Memory of Ice
Featuring the Art of Francesca Samsel
& research of Glacier science Benjamin Keisling
In The Memory of Ice, Samsel translates scientific research and data into a visual language that encompasses fused glass, prints, and ceramics. With Keisling’s scientific exploration of the Greenland ice sheet as a backdrop, Samsel’s work demonstrates how materials drawn from the Earth itself provide entry points into a deepened understanding of planetary processes.
Their interdisciplinary practice merges contemporary research, scientific data and visualization, artistic metaphor, and visual poetry to create an intuitive language through which audiences can engage with complex issues that are vital to our future.
At a moment when the effects of environmental change can feel simultaneously immense and abstract, The Memory of Ice offers another way of looking: slowly, physically, and attentively.
These pieces are glass recreations of ancient glacial ice core samples collected by Benjamin’s team in Greenland. Francesca hand-created and precisely placed each color, layer, bubble, and filament to represent layers of ancient ice, rock, air, and fossil. Each one-of-a-kind panel won’t melt away, but will stand the test of thousands of years.
